controversial ending of the portrait of a lady
Hello everyone,
So, for all the literature nerds out there this is blog where I get to express my views on the most critically acclaimed literature and nonetheless I am open to your views as well. Because literature is nothing but a way to connect and analyse certain complexities of a human mind.
In this blog I wish to express my views on the scandalized ending of the one the best works of literature. The portrait of the lady kept me on edge throughout the journey of Isabel archer. No doubt she is one the complex characters ever been written. She was represented as an independent and strong woman igniting the flames of feminism.
Her views on life were so different from the other ladies of her time.
She was so ambitious a woman that in the first volume, she taught us great deal about how a woman should pursue her dream and marriage is certainly not an end game for everyone. In the era where every woman dreams of marrying a nobleman which is a sign of great career and success. Sure, Isabel disagrees with such success as she rejected the proposals of two nobleman. She was sure that their is more life can present to one. She broke free from all the boundaries of the society.
Well, second volume was no doubt a little disappointing because Isabel deserved a partner who respected her ideas and freedom and Gilbert Osmond was surely not the person.
Their marriage was a proof of wrong judgments and decision. Well, her pure heart was unable to see beyond the masked personality of the man with whom she was going to spend an eternity.
At the end, she was faced with the harsh reality of her marriage. Well, second volume has shown a great deal that how a woman who was so strong of her opinion has transformed into this docile woman which I found difficult to identify.
At last, she gave into the temptation and customs of the society where leaving ones husband is considered as dishonorable.
Well if we see this in another light we would observe that the author has shown the two sides of a woman. 1. Who is strong and independent and have her mind full of views.
2. Who is submissive and whose every idea is linked to the idealizations and principles of her husband. Her every action has a motive to please her husband.
In ending author made the reader to pull out their hairs in thought that actually what happened to Isabel. Why she commenced her journey back to Rome?
Why couldn't she leave her husband? Despite knowing the fact that he was a dishonest man , her marriage was arranged by her husband ex-lover and she was nothing but a bank account to her husband.
When a great life was awaiting her with Caspar goodwood who tried to tempt her by one passionate moment. Still it wasn't enough for her?
Was she bound to her promise to Pansy?
Well, the ending kept as whirring the wheels of our imaginations as to why Isabel sacrificed her love to be with a person she doesn't deserve.
The ending was a tragedy and broke a million hearts. And still no answers as to what were the motives of Isabel.
Well, some people even conjectured that she was trying to punish herself for her misjudgment and for not heeding any attention to the words of Ralph touchett.
All we are left is to form conjectures because her behavior is a mystery till date.
